There are few more experienced heads of rugby in this year’s competition than
Mallett. The former Bath and England prop was a member of the 1995 World Cup
squad and has been giving Millfield’s pupils the benefit of his knowhow
since 2004.
“Part of my role is to give boys the opportunity to stretch themselves.
It’s not just a case of winning lots of school matches, but exploring
opportunities for them to be really stretched as much as they can,”
explained Mallett. “Often, at the moment, perhaps unlike 10 or so years
ago, the best rugby-playing kids are not always in rugby-playing public
schools. There’s a complete mix of colleges, independent schools and state
schools excelling at the game.”
