England rugby star Martin Johnson banned for speeding at 103mph

The Rugby World Cup-winning captain, 43, was pulled over on the M5 on August 13.

Taunton Magistrates Court heard Johnson, of Mowsley, near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, was recorded driving at 107mph.

He admitted a charge of speeding and was disqualified from driving for 49 days.

A spokeswoman for the court said: “Mr Johnson entered a guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.

“He was fined £800, costs of £35 and a victim surcharge of £80. He was also disqualified from driving for 49 days.”

Speaking after the hearing, local road safety campaigner Jane Hofmeister criticised Johnson’s behaviour.

Ms Hofmeister’s daughter Amy, 13, was killed by a speeding driver in Taunton in Somerset in June 2011.

She told the Bridgwater Mercury: “It isn’t a good example from somebody in the public eye. Speed kills – end of. We have speed limits for a reason.”
