Causewayhead youngster David Scott has been named as one of only two Scots-born players in Scotlandâs Rugby League squad for this monthâs World Cup.
Already an international, the 20-year-old Doncaster player will be one of the youngest players in the tournament.
David said: âI am over the moon about being included in the squad. Itâs a great honour to play for your country â especially in a World Cup â and I look forward to wearing the Scotland shirt with pride.â
He already has four Scottish caps after playing for Scotland in 2011 and in 2012, scoring two tries and 10 goals.
In this yearâs squad there are 10 Super League players and four NRL players, including this yearâs Man of Steel winner Danny Brough from Huddersfield Giants.
Scotland Rugby League said: âYouth gets its chance too. Winger David Scott from Stirling, who learned the game at Easterhouse Panthers in Glasgow before joining Hull KR and having a fine few months on loan at Doncaster from Featherstone, retains his place.â
David said: âWhen I was told that I was in the World Cup squad, I had a look at the squad names and saw that there were some real superstars in it. Iâd like to think that I will get some decent game time as after my successful season, I am going in with lots of confidence. Even training with these superstars will be amazing.â
With his selection, David hopes that he can also be an ambassador to assist in the promotion of rugby league in Scotland.
He added: âIâll take any opportunity that I can to help promote the game.
âIâve had help from a lot of people and I could not have done any of this without themâ.
On the forthcoming games, David recognised the challenges ahead. He said, âTonga will probably be the biggest challenge. We need to be ready to do business. Both Italy and the USA are winnable games.
âIf we are successful, then we will go into the quarter finals to play the defending champions, New Zealand.
âOur players have had a successful season and we will be going in with lots of confidence. It would be fantastic to have the chance to face the Haka.â
David started his rugby career playing union at Stirling County minis. In the midis, he moved on to GHA in Glasgow where, at the age of 17, he became the 1st XV stand-off.
He said: âI saw the Rugby League Challenge Cup final on TV and thought I would like to have a go at it.â
