Scunthorpe Rugby Union Club beaten by visiting Newport

A Rather dour but nonetheless interesting game between two evenly matched side was reaching its conclusion when Scunthorpe finally broke through the stubborn Newport defence for Ben Wright to stretch out his right arm over the line to touch down.

The referee was somewhat out of position and behind play and did not see what had happened.

Following a brief period of confusion, he ruled no score and blew the final whistle.

This bizarre conclusion to the game meant that The Greens lost by 15 points to 20 when they should in fact have won the game with a bonus point for the 4th try.

The touchdown being close in to the posts presented an easy conversion and so Scunthorpe would have had a scoreline of 22-20. Such, though, is the drama of sport and the reality must be accepted that a bonus point for being within 7 points of the winning score is all that The Greens get out of this game.

Changes from the previous week’s team saw Chris Neal restored at fullback and Matt Power having his first start of the season in the second row. Jack Leaning and Gavin Hale both came onto the bench after missing the trip to Lymm.

Scunthorpe were first to exert pressure but it was the Shropshire team that got on the scoreboard first through a penalty from James Curgenven after 10 minutes. The home boys were offered an opportunity of their own a minute later but Ash Dibden pulled his kick wide. Curgenven missed another penalty after 15 minutes and with defences on top and the contest at the breakdown closely contested it was hard to see anyone crossing the white wash.

Newport had a man in the bin on 19 minutes but the home boys were unable to capitalise and it was the visitors that made the most of a Scunthorpe error to snatch the lost ball and a deft kick through by Curgenven allowed full back Liam Holder to win the race to touchdown. The conversion was missed and the scoreboard stayed at 8 points to nil.

It was only 5 minutes later that The Greens did what they had threatened to do on several occasions and made the most of a position close to their opponents’ line to drive Craig Coy over for a try. Another missed conversion saw the teams go into half-time with an 8 points to 5 scoreline in favour of the visitors.

Scunthorpe struck first during the second period when following several phases, the ball was moved to the right wing where Ben Wright squeezed over in the corner after 7 minutes.

Back came Newport by playing simple rugby and picking and driving around the fringes, they crossed the Scunthorpe line through second row Jake Goulson. With the influential Curgenven having left the field injured, Holder slotted the conversion to give his side the lead by 15 points to 10.

As the half progressed, the intensity increased and Newport collected another yellow card alongwith home scrum-half Will Harrison.

The Greens exerted most of the pressure but the visiting defence was well marshalled by South African Wouter Van Den Berg who also tidied well behind a retreating scrum.

Pressure by the home boys continued with another visitor going to the bin and the home pack drove once more for the line with Jake Barron crossing. Again the conversion was missed.

A now rare visit into the home half saw Newport take the opportunity to go through their now familiar repertoire with Captain Tom Cowell getting an important touchdown. The extras were not added so the score line read 20points to 15 to the visiting boys. For The last 15 minutes Scunthorpe hammered at the Newport line and felt that they had succeeded with the final play of the game only to be cruelly denied.

They must now pick themselves up for the trip to a buoyant Nuneaton outfit, who have lost only once so far this season.
