CUP OF CHEER Julie Hilling with former Rugby League star Martin Offiah
BOLTON West MP Julie Hilling âhad a ballâ when she met rugby league legends in parliament to celebrate the forthcoming world cup.
The tournament kicks off on October 26 with a total of 26 games being played across the UK and France.
The winners will be crowned after the final at Old Trafford on November 30.
And Ms Hilling said she is particularly excited about the games that Bolton people can enjoy locally at Leigh Sports Village and Wiganâs DW stadium.
She added: âThe Rugby League World Cup 2013 is not just a national event, locally it is something we in Bolton can all look forward to â I for one am really looking forward to seeing the action.
âItâs terrific that another huge multi-national sporting tournament is coming to the UK only a year after the Olympics, and after hearing how well things are going in the England camp from head coach Steve McNamara, we stand a very good chance of becoming World Champions once again.â
The tournament has an extra Bolton link as the official World Cup mascot, Grubber the Bear, was partially designed by Bolton School student Luke James â who will also be leading the teams out for the Old Trafford final.
Ms Hilling, who met legendary former England international Martin Offiah, said: âBy definition, World Cups are the very best a sport has to offer, and with the teams and athletes involved in this yearâs tournament we are sure to see some fantastic games.
âOff the field, we already know itâs going to be the biggest yet, with everything in place and unprecedented ticket sales. I canât wait and I would encourage anyone to get to a game to see some of the best sportsmen in the world.â
Tickets for tournament are selling in record numbers and people who would like to get to games can get their tickets from the official website rlwc2013.com or by calling the ticket hotline on 0844 847 2013.
