England hearts broken as Ireland win in Paris

The frustration was evident for England head coach Stuart Lancaster after seeing his team triumph against Italy with an emphatic 52-11 mauling earlier in the day.

It was the third year in succession England had finished second in the table.

Lancaster mixed pride in his own side’s immense efforts in the Six Nations campaign with a tribute to the Irish.

He said: “Ireland deserve it because they won in France. They are a quality side, and you could see by our reaction when we beat Ireland at Twickenham how much that victory meant to us.

“Yes, we can look back at a couple of unfortunate bounces of the ball in our first match against France and a couple of decisions that went against us.

“But I am so proud of the performances of the team. It is a young team with an average age of 24, and there is so much to be proud of.”
