Wales boss Warren Gatland has revealed there are plans in motion to hold an inter-squad match prior to their trip to South Africa.
Wales will play two Tests against the Springboks in June and due to the possibility the four Welsh regions will not qualify for the RaboDirect PRO12 play-offs, Gatland has pencilled in a possible Probables v Possibles match.
If the PRO12 regions do not reach the play-offs, the game has been teed up for the end of May and will give Gatland a chance to assess his squad before their first Test in Durban on June 14.
“We have got to give ourselves the best possible opportunity we can against South Africa because there’s a possibility May 10 could be the last time our regions play this season,” Gatland told Wales Online. “So we are looking at the possibility of holding a meaningful trial, a Probable versus Possibles on Friday May 30.
“I have already spoken to WRU chief executive Roger Lewis and it would have to be discussed with the regions but it’s what we would like to do if we can get agreement on it. Of course, if any region(s) was to make the Pro12 play-offs we would reassess the situation.”
With Wales currently counting the cost of a bruising Six Nations in which both Leigh Halfpenny and Sam Warburton sustained dislocated shoulders, there were suggestions Gatland would choose to rest some of his players. But he has revealed he will go to South Africa with their first-choice squad.
“Absolutely, we will be fully-loaded. If we rest three or four players, go there and get beaten, it’s not good for us. We have got players coming back, like Ian Evans from suspension and Bradley Davies from injury, and Jake Ball has been a great find for us.”
