Wigan 21 - Hull KR 16: Josh Charnley just too flash

The England star hit a bum note last weekend after nude pictures of him appeared on Twitter.

But Charnley grabbed the spotlight for all the right reasons last night, with a 12-point haul from two tries and two goals.

The Challenge Cup finalists had inflicted a record 84-6 defeat on Rovers in April but there was no risk of a repeat.

Rovers scrapped all match and almost snatched a dramatic late try as they refused to lie down.

The sides had five tries disallowed between them, with the first coming in the opening minutes when Rovers’ Greg Eden was denied for crossing.

The visitors’ bad luck struck again a minute later as Jordan Cox needed oxygen after being knocked out in a tackle on former team-mate Scott Taylor.

Cox had to be helped off and Wigan piled on more pressure with their opening try from Charnley after good work by Ryan Hampshire.

The youngster had replaced the ill Sam Tomkins, with coach Shaun Wane also resting two other key players, Pat Richards and Liam Farrell.

Joe Burgess made his debut on the wing and the 18-year-old made an impressive bow, twice going close to scoring twice.
