England rugby union coach heads to Cumbria

Active Cumbria, The Sport and Physical Activity Partnership will be launching its inaugural Cumbria Coaching Conference on September 20 with a special visit from Stuart Lancaster, England Rugby Union National Head Coach.

The conference will be opened by Stuart, current Cumbria Coach of the Year. Stuart will give a key note speech on his coaching journey and his thoughts on “Developing Talent – The Cumbrian Way”.

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said:

“As a proud Cumbrian I’m looking forward to coming back home and attending the conference. I grew up playing sport in the county and I owe a lot to the coaches who helped me progress. Good coaching is vital to getting young people involved, making their experiences enjoyable, and retaining them in sport as they grow up.”

The conference, taking place at Penrith Rugby Union Club, is being developed and managed by Active Cumbria with an overarching theme of ‘Developing Talent and Performance’. Delegates are able to choose workshop’s from the following areas of development as part of the event:

  • Introduction to Strength Conditioning

  • Core Stability to Improve Performance

  • Developing Mental Toughness Motivation

  • Safeguarding Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults

The Conference is targeted (although not exclusively) at coaches qualified or working towards UKCC Level 2 qualification or equivalent and those working with performers along NGB Talent Pathways.

The event has been developed in response to the success of the pilot Coaching + Development workshops, which took place during 2012. Active Cumbria used these workshops and feedback to establish what sports coaches in Cumbria really want and need in terms of developing their coaching career and skill set. Following a coaching survey carried out by Active Cumbria this year there was an overwhelming response requesting a Coaching Conference in the county. Richard Metcalf, Development Officer for Coaching at Active Cumbria said;

“It gives me great pleasure to invite Stuart to speak at our coaching conference. As a Cumbrian, coaching the national team he has a wealth of knowledge to pass onto our aspiring coaches. Cumbria has a great tradition of producing talented athletes and performers in a great range of sports and this conference provides a superb developmental opportunity for all our coaches. Active Cumbria has formed a strong partnership with staff from University of Cumbria which will allow the coaches to gain more information from several experts in particular fields of athlete support and preparation.”

Places for the conference are £25 per coach and you can book your place online at www.activecumbria.org/coachingconference
