A CELEBRATION will be held in Church Square next week to kick off the St Helens countdown to the Rugby League World Cup 2013.

It will see the competition trophy and tournament mascot being brought to the town centre, where supporters can pose for photographs.

The event, between 11am and 2pm on Friday, August 30, comes ahead of Saints’ evening clash with Warrington at Langtree Park, which is expected to draw a large crowd.

Mascot Grubber will be on hand to greet fans while promoters will be handing out freebies and tournament fixture lists.

Meanwhile, dance performances from the Saints Angels and Sutton Tornados cheerleading groups will provide entertainment.

The trophy is coming to town because Langtree Park hosts a group game between Australia and Fiji on Saturday, November 2 (kick off 8pm).

It means the town’s rugby followers will have the chance to watch the Green and Golds, who in Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater and Greg Inglis, boast some of the biggest stars in the sport.

The tournament has not been played on British shores since the disappointing RLWC of 2000.

Next Friday’s event will represent the first attempt to generate excitement in St Helens ahead of the competition, which kicks off in Cardiff on Saturday, October 26.

There was some disappointment that the town’s £30m stadium – which is currently having cladding fitted on its open stands – missed out being selected for a knock out fixture but tournament organisers will hope the lure of the Aussie stars proves enough.

A considerable number of supporters from Down Under are expected to visit the town for the game in November and St Helens Council’s events team is planning on staging an Australia Day to mark the occasion.
