  • Jermaine McGillvary scored twice for Huddersfield

  • Winger Jermaine McGillvary scored two early tries as Huddersfield powered back to the top of Super League with a fifth straight win, 46-4 over Salford.

The academy product, 25, went over in the second minute against a weakened Salford side from Scott Grix’s kick into the right corner.

And then, three minutes later, Danny Brough collected his own kick through and passed to Leroy Cudjoe, whose quick off-load put McGillvary in.

McGillvary, who scored against Salford in a 21-20 defeat in March, has bagged seven tries in his last four outings and has 17 touchdowns for the season.

The Giants scored seven tries in total as the City Reds were outclassed.

Warrington survived a huge scare before maintaining their Super League title bid by downing Castleford 40-30 to record their eighth successive league win.

After their shock Challenge Cup semi-final defeat against Hull, Warrington found themselves facing another loss after falling 24-6 down in the first half, but they showed their class by bouncing back to turn the game round after the interval.

Three tries in six minutes early in the second period put the Wolves in front and although battling Castleford levelled at 30-30 with 15 minutes remaining, late scores by Mick Higham – his second of the game – and Joel Monaghan gave Wolves the win.

Stefan Ratchford chipped in with six goals in a win that kept Warrington one point behind leaders Huddersfield with four league games left.

Bradford kept their hopes of making the Super League play-offs alive with a crucial 26-24 win at Wakefield.

The Bulls came back from an eight-point deficit to edge the Wildcats score in a tight contest at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The match was a crucial one for both teams as Wakefield and Bradford sat three and four points behind eighth-placed Hull at kick-off respectively.

Tommy Makinson and Paul Wellens bagged a brace of tries as St Helens continued their fine recent form with a comfortable 26-6 victory over Catalan Dragons at Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Francis Meli and Makinson put Saints in the ascendancy and while centre Morgan Escare helped Catalan back into the match midway through the first half, his converted try was to prove mere consolation.

Makinson crossed again just after half-time, while Wellens – on his 400th Super League appearance for St Helens – made the game safe with two tries as the Lancashire club followed up their impressive wins over Castleford and local rivals Wigan with another two points.

Josh Charnley touched down twice as Wigan, aided by a controversial video referee decision, wore down Hull KR 21-16 to reclaim top spot in Super League.

The Warriors winger scored at the start of each half in an influential display at the DW Stadium that also saw him set up Darrell Goulding and kick two goals.

But his second try, with the score at 10-10, was contentious and sparked much debate as to whether he had grounded the ball in the corner.

Wigan went on to secure the win through Anthony Gelling but Rovers, after earlier scores through Greg Eden and Michael Dobson, set up a tight finish through Evarn Tuimavave.

A brace of tries each from Jamie Shaul, Tom Briscoe and Jacob Miller helped Hull FC notch their first league win in six matches as they thrashed Widnes Vikings 72-10 at the KC Stadium.

Last Sunday, the Black and Whites booked their place in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup final with a 16-12 win against Warrington, but in the league they had lost five games on the bounce.

Hull took an early lead with a Daniel Holdsworth long-range try before Widnes hit straight back with an effort by Cameron Phelps. FC regained their six-point advantage when Briscoe crossed in the corner.

Brown scored for the Vikings to level, before three quick tries for Hull by Kirk Yeaman and Shaul (two) gave FC a 18-point half-time lead.

Two Miller tries just after the hour mark sealed the game for FC, before Briscoe and Richard Whiting added further scores with Aaron Heremaia, Joe Arundel and Mark O’Meley putting the icing on the cake.
