Ben Ryan earmarked for Team GB rugby sevens coaching role at Rio Olympic ...

Friday resigned from his position as Kenya head coach last week.

London Scottish director of rugby Simon Amor, a former captain of the England

sevens side, could also come under consideration.

Meanwhile, there appears to be little hope of Premiership Rugby and their

French counterparts reaching agreement with their fellow ERC stakeholders

over the future of the Heineken Cup before the start of the season.

The England and French clubs are standing by their call for the tournament to

be restructured, including a reduction in the number of teams from 24 to 20,

from 2014.

But it is understood there is little hope of any significant negotiations

until next month.

Premiership Rugby meanwhile has been engaged in talks with NFL American

football franchises as part of a bid to grow rugby union in the US.

London Irish were involved in advanced talks about staging a pre-season

friendly in Boston against a US Barbarians side, but the game was postponed

until next year because of a lack of time to market the game.

The prospect of any Premiership matches being staged in America however

appears remote.

British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton says he hopes to return to

action in time to lead Wales in their opening autumn Test match, against

South Africa on Nov 9.

The 24 year-old is recovering from a serious hamstring injury he sustained

during the Lions’s second Test defeat by Australia in Melbourne in June.

“The initial diagnosis was 12-16 weeks, I have been in doing rehab and we are

on course for that,” said Warburton. “If I could get back for that sometime

in October, that would be good.” Toby Faletau, the Wales and British and

Irish Lions No 8, has turned down a lucrative move to France in favour of

extending his contract with the Newport Gwent Dragons.

Faletau, who played in the 41-16 third Test victory over Australia in Sydney

last month, has signed a two-year contract extension.
