Baby boom takes toll on Kidwelly ladies" rugby team

A WOMEN’S rugby team has been thrown into crisis — after a third of the team fell pregnant.

And now Kidwelly’s ladies’ rugby club has issued a desperate plea for new players to come forward, because the expectant mums have left the squad as they prepare for impending motherhood.

In addition to the pregnancies, some players have also retired from the game, leaving the team which competes in Wales Rugby Union Ladies’ Division 3 south with dwindling numbers.

Team manager Kim Hulance has now issued a call for reinforcements.

The 33-year-old said new recruits were crucial to safeguard the club’s future.

She said: “We have had a team going for a couple of years and found we have lost a lot of ladies recently. It has meant we have had to pull out of some of the competitions and haven’t fulfilled some fixtures last year.

“We had a large number of girls getting pregnant unfortunately — five, a third of the team, and we have had a few who have retired, while some did not like all the travelling that was involved. I do not think people would mind so much if it was just the home games. We had nine players going to a league game last season, which is a very low number.”

The manager called on anyone interested to meet the team and see if they enjoy playing. “I understand it’s not for everyone, but anyone who is interested should come and give it a go,” she said.

“It’s very important for the future of the team and also important for the future of women’s rugby in the area in general.

“We have seen women’s teams dwindling over the years, but then there are other people out there who have been travelling from distances from Swansea to Whitland and places like that to play the sport.”
