Rugby duo land national recognition

A PAIR of South Tyneside rugby clubs are celebrating after landing national recognition.

Both South Tyneside College (STC) and Jarrovians rugby clubs have received accreditation awards from the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Clubs must achieve success in a number of key areas before achieving the award.

This includes successfully recruiting and retaining players and high-quality coaches, good management, and developing links with the local community.

The scheme aims to help clubs continually improve, while demonstrating a real commitment to providing all that’s best in rugby union.

Rugby development director Steve Grainger said: “In the lead-up to Rugby World Cup 2015 we are all aware that our clubs are at the forefront in growing and developing the game.

“We want to help them to make sure they are at the very heart of their communities, welcoming new players and volunteers, while developing those they already have.

“To do this successfully they will all be looking to provide the kind of facilities that attract members and to a club that is well-run.”

South Tyneside College Rugby Club are delighted to have received the recognition.

Dan McKay, club manager of STC rugby, said: “It is fantastic for our club to be recognised, and receive the RFU accreditation award.

“We are a club on the up after a massive restructure in July 2011, and this award can only help to encourage our growth.

“We have worked closely with Matt Bryan, our rugby development officer, for a number of months now and he is helping us move forward.

“Our club is constantly growing, and we hope with the support of the RFU we can continue to do so.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved at South Tyneside College RUFC for their continued hard work and support.”

Both sides were presented with their awards following their derby match last weekend.

The duo met in the league at Grosvenor Road, and also battled it out for possession of the Bob Taylor Memorial Cup.

Sadly for Jarrovians they had no answer to a rampant College, who ran out 47-0 victors to take the derby bragging rights and the cup.
