Devonport Services U14…5 Stonehouse Sharks U14…14

AN IMMENSE performance from Sharks gave them bragging rights over their local rivals.

The match started badly for Stonehouse. An attempt to run the ball from behind their own posts led to Services scoring first.

Playing into driving wind and rain, Stonehouse spent most of the first half on the back foot.

Captain Joseph Lynch led from the front as usual.

Stonehouse eventually managed to claw themselves into the Devonport half and it gave them the fillip they needed.

From a scrum near halfway, they set up a powerful drive before the ball was sent to outside Tommy Pullinger and on to speedy centre Lewis Andrews who, despite having to a lot of work to do, burst through to score under the posts. He duly added the extras.

Sharks won a penalty 10 metres inside the Services half and, instead of kicking for touch, popped the ball to second row substitute Tom Hinds.

Hinds’ fresh pace and power proved too much for the Devonport defence and he scraped over the line. Andrews converted.

Brixham U11…21 Ivybridge U11…42

THIS was a tough match in tough conditions but Ivybridge prevailed, skilfully overcoming a large Brixham front five.

The driving rain and winds were always going to make running rugby a challenge and the Brixham forwards kept things tight from the outset to score under the posts. Ivybridge countered brilliantly with a mazy run to score in the corner. Another Brixham try followed but Ivybridge bounced back with good running leading to a try.

The Brixham forwards again trundled up the pitch with a rolling maul and the referee saw the ball grounded over the try-line despite valiant Ivybridge defence.

Spurred into action the green machine were now on the front foot and scored twice with strong runs from the back of the scrum before sprinting away to score again in the corner.

Ivybridge’s tails were up as they forced Brixham back with surging run after surging run. All nine tries were converted.

Stonehouse Sharks U11…52 Devonport Services U11…7

THIS was a fantastic game of rugby in hard conditions for both teams – but it was the Sharks who had the better of the game.

Some great forward play in the scrum and line out by Ollie Simmons, Ben Foster and Tom Brookman allowed Sharks to take control of the match.

From a well formed ruck, scrum-half Foster Parker threw the ball out to Tom Woodward who ran along the touch line to off load to Neo Ruston to open the scoring – converted by Harrison Truswell.

Another winning ruck saw the ball spun out along the line to Henry Jamieson who powered through the visitors defence to touch down.

Some fast paced runs by Toby Lean and Sam Rhodes made huge yards for Sharks allowing Ruston to score his second.

Aaron Duffield made a magical touch line run to score his first try of the game. Seconds later a massive pass from Jamie Jagger saw him score his second with a super dive over the line.

Services kept their heads up but Sharks were just too strong.

A long run by Johnny Barns helped Woodward score his first of the day.

In the second half a line out won by Ethan Hodge for Sharks saw the ball fly out to Finlay Nicol who almost scored only to lay off to Woodward for another try.

Duffield managed to complete his hat-trick with a well timed run into space and over the line.

Towards the very end Services got a well deserved try and conversion.

Stonehouse Sharks U9…6

Devonport Services U9…5

(score in tries)

SHARKS pulled it out the bag again with a third win in a row in a pulsating derby.

Great ball control and passing along the line saw Sharks dominate possession. However a strong Services defence denied the home team the opening try.

With the ball now in Services hands brave Sharks defending led by Asher Matthews, Joseph Edwards and Ben Roy was not enough to prevent Services going over the whitewash.

Sharks soon equalised following a searing run by Matthews leaving defenders clutching at thin air.

In a first half characterised by great defence from both sides it was the visitors who had the final say scoring try number two.

Sharks showed their teeth early in the second half with first Cowan McVeigh powering through the middle to go over and man of the match Toby Diston bagging a brace with Services only managing a single try in reply.

Eddie Beall charged through for the home side only for some resolute defence to prevent the try. And Diston denied his hat-trick by the touch line. Something had to give and it was the visitors’ defence as Diston notched up his third try.

Stung into action Services responded with a well worked effort. However the home side countered well and Sam Bishop scored try number six. The visitors continued to apply pressure in search of another try and duly got their reward.

However with time running out a manful defensive effort by Sharks ensured they kept their line and winning streak intact.

Plymstock Albion Oaks U7
