Welsh rugby union prop Craig Mitchell has been held in custody overnight until he can figure out how to urgently obtain compensation cash for a man he assaulted in Brisbane last weekend while celebrating the Lions win.

Mitchell, who has represented his country during Test matches, was arrested early Sunday morning after knocking Cian Barry unconscious at the Normanby Hotel with a single punch.

Mr Barry, who is the son of retired Family Court Justice James Barry, received stitches under his eye and to his cheek, and has damaged vision as a result of the unprovoked attack.

The court heard Mr Barry had been trying to smooth over an altercation between his friends and a group of Lions supporters after some jovial sporting banter turned sour.

He was first punched by Welsh tourist Richard Andrew Davies, and then by Mitchell, who travelled to Australia to watch the game.

Mitchell pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday to one count of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm, while Davies pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

Magistrate Anne Thacker fined Davies $1000 and ordered he pay Mr Barry $2000 compensation.

She said Mitchell, who intends to fly home on Friday, should also pay a substantial amount of compensation.

Ms Thacker did not specify how much Mitchell should pay, but said it would be more than Davies.

After Mitchell indicated he was uncertain how he could obtain the money at such short notice, Ms Thacker revoked his bail and ordered he spend the night in the watch house until he could determine how he could find the cash.

His matter will return to court on Friday morning.
