Welsh rugby star"s night in jail for punching reveller

A WALES rugby star is spending the night in an Australian jail after punching

a man in a bar fight.

Prop Craig Mitchell, 27, was Down Under watching the British and Irish Lions

when he got involved in a dust up in a Brisbane pub.

He was celebrating the Lions’ first test win over the Aussies when rival fans

clashed.

And a court heard that 18stone Mitchell hospitalised victim Cian Barry with

one punch.

According to The Australian newspaper, Mr Barry needed multiple stitches to

his face just below his left eye and suffered blurred vision.

The forward, who plays club rugby for Exeter Chiefs, pleaded guilty to one

count of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was ordered to pay compensation to his victim – but his bail was revoked

because he said he was not sure how he could raise the money at short

notice.

Magistrate Anne Thacker said: “Gratuitous violence in these sorts of

situations while people are drinking and celebrating rugby matches is not

acceptable,” she said.

“In Queensland, in Australia at the moment, we have a particular problem

with drunken violence at rugby matches and surrounding rugby matches.”

He is due in Brisbane Magistrates’ Court again on Friday.

Mitchell, who formerly played for the Ospreys, has been capped by Wales 15

times.

The front rower is in Australia as a fan, having been in the Welsh squad for

the team’s tour of Japan earlier this month.
