McGill rugby star Barber seeks fundraising for trip to England with Canadian ...

McGill University: MONTREAL (June 27, 2013) Emily Barber, a McGill University student from Fenelon Falls, Ont., is on a fundraising mission to help cover the costs associated with being one of 26 players selected by Rugby Canada to represent the national under-20 team at the Nations Cup tournament at Trent College in Nottingham, England, July 8-21, 2013.

The U-20 program is based on a pay-to-play model with volunteer staff. As a result, the goal for each player is to raise about $5,000 to cover travel, accommodation and meals. An online donation page has been set up in Emily Barber’s name where sponsors can directly deposit donations via PayPal. As of June 25, she had raised $1,150. Anyone interested in supporting her mission can do so and follow her fundraising progress online at the following link: http://raiseathon.ca/U20Women/profile/jok131w

The Team Canada U-20 roster features 18 players from Canadian Interuniversity Sport institutions, including nine from the Ontario conference (OUA), four from the Canada West league, three from the Atlantic division (AUS) and two from the Quebec university conference (RSEQ). Joining Barber on the team from the RSEQ is Frederique Rajotte, a native of Markham, Ont., who helped the Concordia Stingers capture the league championship last fall.

In two seasons with the Martlets, Barber, a 5-foot-7 forward, has tallied 85 points, with 17 tries in 14 career contests. She was sixth in the RSEQ scoring race last fall with 50 points after ranking seventh in her freshman campaign with 35 points.

“Being selected to represent Canada on the international stage is a great honour and an amazing opportunity to compete and to be coached at an elite level,” said the 19-year-old management sophomore, who began the sport at the age of 14 and has played three years for the Ontario provincial team. She also happens to be the daughter of Paul Barber, a McGill engineering graduate who was a rugged defenceman for the Redmen hockey team from 1981 to 1986 and served as team captain in his senior year.

Canada, under the guidance of head coach Sandro Fiorino, is scheduled to open against the United States on July 11, followed by games against England (July 14) and South Africa (July 17). The medal round is slated for July 21.

The Canadians, who own a 3-8-0 lifetime record in three previous tourney appearances, will be looking to improve upon a third-place finish at the last event in 2011. England, the three-time reigning champions, owns an 11-0 lifetime record in the competition.

The Canadian U-20 squad will meet in Toronto on June 30 for a six-day camp that will feature a match against the Ontario Storm, a senior women’s team, before heading overseas.

“With only a week’s time together the team will focus on putting in our game plans for defence and attack,” said Fiorino, who recently announced a fundraising campaign, called “Lace Up for the Ladies”, which involves all team members selling shoelaces in order to raise funds to help offset the cost of participating in the tournament.

“This is a great initiative adopted by the team and a fantastic opportunity for Canadians to show their support for women’s rugby,” said Fiorino.

There is no specific price listed for the shoelaces but they are hoping for a minimum donation of $20. More info on the “Lace Up for the Ladies” campaign is available online at: events.rugbycanada.ca

The Nations Cup is an international women’s rugby series organized jointly by USA Rugby, the Rugby Football Union for Women (England) and Rugby Canada, with rotating host locations. There are separate tournaments for U-20 and senior sides. The first U-20 tournament took place in 2008 in Oakville, Ont., followed by the 2009 tourney in England and the 2011 competition in Santa Barbara, Calif.
