New Tamworth rugby coach learned ropes under England supremo

TAMWORTH RFC will attack the Midland Two West North campaign with a new coach and skipper.


The club has announced that Charlie Maunder will be first team coach next season.

The 33-year-old, from Yorkshire, started his rugby career with Otley and progressed to Leicester Tigers Academy. He then had two seasons at Leeds Tykes where he played some first-team rugby.


Maunder also represented Wharfedale, Harrogate, and Nottingham in National One.

While at Leeds, Maunder was coached by Stuart Lancaster, now England head coach.


Maunder also had a couple of seasons with Bournville where he commenced in an assistant coach-type role and last season he worked with Camp Hill as a backs and fitness coach.


Prop Dean Smith has taken over as Tamworth’s new first-team skipper.


He replaces Tommy Franks, who will remain in the first-team squad. Meanwhile, at Tamworth’s end of season awards night recently, Players Player and Outstanding Player of the Year awards went to Lee Bradshaw.


The Most Improved Player was Dan Wayne, the Captain’s Player of the Year was John Borthwick and the Young Player was Kris Taft.
