Rugby league’s new professional structure set to be agreed

RUGBY league’s new professional structure for 2015 onwards is to be finally agreed at an extraordinary general meeting of the RL Council on Wednesday, October 9.

The EGM will consider proposals on the structure of the competitions, restoring promotion and relegation to Super League, club sustainability and player development.

The Rugby Football League’s preferred option is to have two Super Leagues of 12 teams at the start of the 2015 campaign, to be split into three groups of eight towards the end of the year.

The top eight vie for the title, the middle eight vie for a place in Super League 1 the following season, and the bottom eight battle to avoid the drop from Super League 2 into rugby league’s third tier, currently Championship One, the format of which will also be decided.

The other option is to revert to straight promotion and relegation between the top two tiers, each comprising 12 teams.

Presently, there are 14 teams in Super League, 14 in the second tier, the Kingstone Press Championship, and nine in Championship One.

York City Knights have been relegated to Championship One for 2014 but have been told by RFL chiefs that, despite the fact the top two tiers are shrinking in 12 months’ time, there will still be a pathway back to the Championship (or Super League 2), via straight promotion from Championship One or via play-offs with teams at the foot of the Championship.

The EGM follows an extensive consultation process with all levels of the game over the last six months, including direct engagement with supporters of clubs at all levels from Super League, the Championships and the community game.
