Despite suffering a 19-5 defeat against New Zealand in their final Pool A match at the Glasgow Sevens, defending champions South Africa will tackle hosts Scotland on Sunday afternoon in one of the four Cup quarterfinal matches.

The knockout match against the Scots starts at 13h42 and will be televised live on SuperSport.

Prior to their last match of the day, the Springbok Sevens were top of their pool after comprehensive wins over Portugal (38-0) and Samoa (40-0). However, their 19-5 loss against New Zealand meant they finished as runners-up to the Kiwis on the final pool standings.

The Glasgow Sevens is the penultimate round of the HSBC Sevens World Series, which concludes next week at Twickenham with the London Sevens. South Africa are currently seven points adrift log leaders New Zealand on the World Series log table.

The Springbok Sevens kept a clean sheet in their first two matches, and they defended with purpose against New Zealand during an absorbing first half. However, the Kiwis finally managed to break through their resistance when Adam Whitelock scored with just 35 seconds remaining in the first half.

Substitute Justin Geduld then scored with his first touch of the ball after halftime level matters at 5-5. However, the Kiwis added two more converted tries through Akira Ioane and Ben Lam to win 19-5 and claim top spot in Pool A.

Earlier, the Springbok Sevens scored six tries against Portugal in their opening fixture of the day. Branco du Preez, Justin Geduld (2), Philip Snyman, Kwagga Smith and Seabelo Senatla were the try scorers.

Six more tries and ten points from five conversions assured them a 40-0 runaway victory over Samoa. Dippenaar, Geduld, Snyman, Jamba Ulengo, Senatla and debutant Shaun Adendorff each dotted down for the South Africans.

Neil Powell, the Springbok Sevens coach, said his team can expect a tough encounter against home team Scotland.

“Scotland will be playing with a lot of pride and the support of their home supporters, which will make it difficult for us. However, we will just try to focus on what we want to achieve, execute our plan and hopefully things will go our way then,” said Powell.

The Cup Quarterfinal draw for the Glasgow Sevens on Sunday:

12:58 New Zealand v Australia

13:20 Fiji v England

13:42 Scotland v South Africa

14:04 Canada v Kenya
