Bath Rugby stars surprise Barley Close Community Primary School

Houston paid Barley Close Community Primary School a visit as pupils were treated to a session with him and team-mates Micky Young and Anthony Watson.

And Houston, who joined Bath Rugby for the start of this season following time spent in France, couldn’t put a price on the importance of visits like theirs to enthusiastic primary schools.

“As a club, we like to get involved with the community and it’s great that Aviva are supporting the local community with the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme,” he said.

The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme, in its fourth year and supported by all 12 Aviva Premiership clubs, involves a six-week introduction to rugby culminating in a tag rugby festival.

One school from each Premiership Rugby club region will represent the region on 31 May at Twickenham on Aviva Premiership Rugby Final day where they will take part in a showpiece event at half time in front of a sell-out Twickenham crowd.

Bath Rugby scrum-half Micky Young insisted seeing the smiles on the children’s faces made the trip with Houston and Watson worth every second:

“It was good fun. When you see the kids enjoying themselves it’s pretty awesome,” he said.

“It’s enjoyable for us when you see the children so interested, running around, having fun and getting outside rather than what a lot of kids up and down the country do – sitting indoors not doing a lot.”

Leroy Houston and Micky Young were speaking at an Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme session. The programme has introduced more than 140,000 children to rugby over the last four years. Find out more at premiershiprugby.com/community
