Sports Awards 2014: Who will challenge Brent Wilson for rugby accolade this ...

BRENT Wilson won the Professional Rugby Player of the Year accolade at the Nottingham Post Sports Awards in 2013 and the Kiwi will again be among the candidates this year.

Wilson was rewarded for a fine 2012/13 season when he inspired Nottingham Rugby from the front as captain to lead them to a second-placed finish and the Championship play-off semi-finals.

And while the Green and Whites may have struggled a bit more last season, in contrast, there were still some fine individual performances along the way.

Wilson himself did a superb job to steer a young and small squad away from the perils of relegation on the field with some talismanic displays from back-row forward.

Fellow pack man Dan Montagu, the second-rower, was named club player of the season after the fantastic performances he put in week after week after playing every game – something which is unheard of as a forward.

After a tough start to the season, it was always going to be a battle at the wrong end of the Championship but Nottingham came good when it mattered most to ensure their survival.

When it mattered most the Greens turned on the style in a scintillating first half performance against Moseley, in the penultimate game of the season, scoring four tries to blow the visitors away.

The bonus point win meant the city was guaranteed a Championship rugby team for yet another year.

Wing Ryan Hough, who was shortlisted for the rugby award in 2013, scored two of the tries on the day – one a fine breakaway – to set up the all-important victory.

But, as with all of the Nottingham Post Sport Awards 2014 categories, the only way that your favourite can win is if the public votes for them using one of the Post’s official nomination forms in the paper or visiting www.nottinghampost.com/sportsawards and filling out a form online.

The nomination period closes on September 14.

The winners will then be announced at a glamorous awards ceremony, which will be hosted in the state-of-the-art East Midlands Conference Centre in the city on Thursday, October 30.
