Rugby - Rodwell confident England can light up rugby sevens show

Rugby’s shortened form will make it’s Olympics debut at Rio 2016 but it has been a regular fixture on the Commonwealth stage for some years, with Glasgow it’s fifth appearance.

During that time the Kiwis have not lost a single match, although Rodwell insists that fact can change with the competition getting underway on Saturday.

Back in May England triumphed over New Zealand 15-12 at the London World Sevens Series.

And while Rodwell and England will first have to navigate their way past Pool D opponents Sri Lanka, Uganda and Australia, Rodwell insists they are ready to take on the Kiwis in the latter stages.

“There’s no fear factor there for us, I enjoy playing against New Zealand,” said Rodwell, who has appeared in more than 70 World Series events. “They’re the team to beat as they have not lost a game in Commonwealth history.

“We have a strong belief we have a good squad up here in Glasgow and we’re ready to do something special. The win over New Zealand in London definitely gave us a boost.

“We’ve had some good tussles with them this season and a couple of victories, which gives us the belief that if we play to our potential, we can give anyone a really good run for their money and come out on top.”

The competition takes place at Ibrox Stadium with New Zealand opening proceedings against Canada in Pool A – a group that also includes hosts Scotland.

England start their campaign against Sri Lanka while Wales take on Malaysia first up in Pool C.
