Get ready for a scrum down in the sand tomorrow as Swanseaâs annual beach rugby tournament returns for its ninth year raising cash for Wales Air Ambulance.
In what promises to be its biggest event to date, no fewer than 36 teams will be competing for the coveted male and female trophies, including two teams from across the Severn Bridge âWorcestershire and Enfield â who will be squaring up against the best of local talent.
This yearâs trophy will also see the traditional rivalry between Swansea and Llanelli reignited a little earlier than normal, as two-time tournament veteransâ Swansea Gladiators and newcomers Llanelli Warriors battle it out in the inaugural Fair Play Match.
And while it might be a touch rugby, tournament featuring players of varying abilities, as anyone familiar with the event will know, things can get pretty physical in the heat of the action.
Luckily, keeping tabs on things will be some referees of the highest calibre, led by top Nigel Owens, once again giving up his time for the occasion.
âItâs a privilege to be asked to referee again this year,â says Nigel. âWhether itâs refereeing the All Blacks in Eden Park or the Porth boys on the beach, my job is to ensure the games run smoothly.â
And if all this rugby wasnât enough, when the sun starts to fade, there will be an après beach party at Peppermint in Wind Street until late.
