Mike Phillips: Wales scrum-half sacked by Bayonne earlier this season
Racing Metro president Jacky Lorenzetti has confirmed that the club are close to completing a deal for Mike Phillips.
Phillips is without a club after he was sacked by fellow Top 14 side Bayonne in October for allegedly turning up drunk for a training session.
The Wales scrum-half denies the charges and has launched legal proceedings against the Basque side.
“We are on the right tracks and we should put pen to paper shortly,” said Lorenzetti.
Phillips revealed after Wales’ loss to Australia last weekend that he will link up with his new employers this week and expects to make his debut next Saturday.
“I’m going somewhere tomorrow,” said the 31-year-old after the 30-26 loss to the Wallabies.
“I don’t want to say anything yet, but I’m away somewhere tomorrow and I’m happy enough. I’m hoping to play next Saturday.”
When asked whether he was heading to one of Europe’s top sides, Phillips said: “I will look to surround myself with the best. I am just looking forward and as it stands I am pretty happy.”
Phillips will face tough opposition for a place in the Racing starting line-up, with France international Maxime Machenaud currently in the No.9 shirt.
