LEEK bounced back superbly from their first defeat of the season to see off Loughborough 32-10 on enemy territory in the quarter-finals of the Midlands Intermediate Cup.
Josh Mays Woodhead opened their scoring after fine anticipation left him intercepting and streaking home.
Gary McDermott vacated his excellent kicking duties to claim Leek’s second when quick ball left him dancing past the opposition to go over and open up an 18-5 half-time lead.
Loughborough hit back with a try to trail 18-10 and leave the next score pivotal to the final outcome.
And Leek had to ensure something of a siege from the home side before breaking the shackles and scoring from Andy McFadden’s catch and drive from a lineout close to the Loughborough line.
Leek’s victory was sealed eight minutes from time after Ed Harrison’s break teed up a ruck from which Liam McDermott burrowed his way home.
Sam Evans bagged a hat-trick of tries to inspire NEWCASTLE to a 30-15 home win over Ashby to reach the semi-finals of the Midlands Senior Vase.
Evans opened his account just before the break to add to a couple of earlier Ronan Evans penalties for an 11-5 interval lead.
Ashby hit back with a couple of tries before Evans out-sprinted the visiting defence to leave Newcastle 21-15 in front.
Wayne Scott then crashed over, and Ronan Evans put over the conversion, before Sam Evans completed his hat-trick to leave Ronan converting.
STAFFORD’S valiant defence couldn’t keep a powerful Walsall side at bay in the second half of their 32-13 home defeat in the quarter-finals of the Staffs County Cup.
The teams were locked together at 13-13 by the break after Stafford more than held their own.
A couple of Nick Oxley penalties were followed by their only try of the match when a forward foray culminated in Oli Greatholder muscling his way over the Walsall line.
It was a different story in the second half as Walsall pressure resulted in three tries, however, before Greatholder and Chris Usher came close to a deserved consolation.
