Stowe start season with double-success at Tynedale RFC Schools Rugby Festival

Stewart’s-Melville, alma mater of legendary Scotland internationals Jim and

Finlay Calder, meet Merchiston Castle on Saturday.

Former Edinburgh and Scotland A coach Rob Moffat has taken over as director of

rugby at Merchiston.

Moffat, as head of PE and rugby coach at Galashiels Academy, taught rugby

players Gregor Townsend and Chris Paterson, who went on to star for their

country.

Elsewhere, Dundee High School enjoyed a 50-12 victory over Glasgow Academy,

running in eight tries, with three from wing Rhys Paterson, a formidable 60

metres sprinter, who is third quickest in Scotland over the distance as a

junior.

Dollar Academy narrowly defeated George Heriot’s School 15-14 at home.

Meanwhile, Paralympic gold medallists Hannah Cockroft and Jonnie Peacock will

be in Sheffield next week to support the Sainsbury’s School Games, having

competed there in the past.

They will hold a sprint masterclass for a group of youngsters who will be

competing at the event this year. More than 1,600 schoolchildren will

compete at the Sainsbury’s School Games from Sept 12-15 in 12 sports, six of

which have disability competition.
