Rugby Union Round-Up: Leicetser"s Manu of steel, Tuilagi, shows mettle

But the return of Manu Tuilagi for Leicester against Newcastle for his first appearance since the Lions tour showed Lancaster he will, in this instance, be sticking with what he knows.

Centre Tuilagi had been a focus of attention during the week for making a bunny-ears gesture behind Prime Minister David Cameron .

He went from that to a prominent role in the Tigers’ 31-6 defeat of the promoted side, including the charging run that made Graham Kitchener’s try.

“He is a very aggressive player,” said Leicester coach Paul Burke.

“There aren’t many players in world rugby who can do what Manu does.”

At Kingsholm, Billy Twelvetrees edged the contest with Northampton’s Luther Burrell to fill Barritt’s place inside Tuilagi, landing a contentious last-kick penalty that gave Gloucester a 26-24 victory .

Northampton coach Jim Mallinder plainly thought the impassioned Gloucester locals had got to referee Martin Fox.

He said: “It’s a shame when games are decided by the referee in the last couple of minutes. At Kingsholm, the crowd have a big effect so you have to be accurate and take the referee out of the game.”
