Rugby union: Floyd stars as Leek cut down local rivals

JAMES Floyd scored two tries and made another as LEEK won 43-5 at STAFFORD to make it two wins out of two in Midlands Two West (North).

Stafford have lost their first two games by contrast and were hardly helped by three yellow cards against the Moorlands outfit.

Yet they could have anticipated a very different afternoon when a solid forward drive created the platform for the ball to be spun out for Rich Martin to stretch over the try line after just five minutes.

But that was as good as it got for the home side, and 21-year-old Floyd used his speed to race home for his first as Leek went in 13-5 ahead at the break.

Floyd also bagged Leek’s second after a series of rucks left him skirting round the outside of his man to touch down again.

Quick ball and clever handling by Josh Mays Woodhead and Liam McDermott allowed Nick Palmer to sprint home for Leek’s third of the afternoon from the 22.

And then skipper Gary McDermott, taking brief time off from kicking 18 points, provided support from a tap penalty to gather from Palmer and score under the posts.

Full-back Jack Newton-Taylor than claimed the try he deserved after Dan Needham fed Floyd for a swift turn of pace before off-loading to the try scorer.

DAN Jones scored all but five of NEWCASTLE’S points as they pulled off a welcome 24-6 win at Yardley in Midlands Three West (North).

Kieran Johnson crashed over for their first score, but thereafter it was Jones bagging all his team’s points.

He followed up his conversion of Johnson’s try by going over himself after grabbing a forward kick to touch down and subsequently convert.

Jones excelled again in the second half by scoring a penalty and converting his second try of the afternoon to complete a handsome victory.

Skipper Chris Miller must have turned in some performance because he, not Jones, was voted Newcastle’s man-of-the-match.

UTTOXETER were indebted to a fine James Gill try for their only trip over the line during their 15-11 home defeat to Handsworth in Midlands Three West (North).

Paul Milward had slotted a penalty to leave Uttoxeter trailing 5-3 when Gill then struck to raise the home side’s spirits.

A late tackle left Uttoxeter standing over a penalty which was taken quickly by Milward and he drew the cover tackle before firing his pass out wide for Gill to go over.

In the second half Pete Allen repeatedly grabbed from the base of the scrum to crash into visiting defenders, winning a penalty on one occasion for Milward to claim his side’s only points in the second 40.
