Rugby League World Cup trophy comes to Bolton
THE Rugby League World Cup trophy came to Bolton as the town prepares to welcome Fijian rugby stars.
Bolton will play host to the Fiji team, who will stay in the borough and play group games in Rochdale, St Helens and Hull.
The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Colin Shaw, and Bolton Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris were in Victoria Square to welcome the trophy to Bolton on its tour of the country.
Cllr Shaw said: âWeâre very excited to welcome the Rugby League World Cup to Bolton, and to host the Fijian team, which is an honour in itself.
âHopefully the Fijians and all our townâs visitors will get to see what a friendly town Bolton is.
âTheyâll also see that weâre very sports-minded and co-operative.
âEvery major event we have brings revenue into the town and creates a higher profile for Bolton.
âIâd love to visit some of the games and Iâm sure I will.â
Cllr Shaw also pointed to the positive impact the Rugby League World Cup could have on Boltonâs younger generations.
He said: âItâll help a lot with the childrenâs sport in the town. This is something we are conscious of and have done a lot of work to promote.â
Bolton Arena will be used as a team training camp for Fiji, one of the 14 competing nations, and the Whites Hotel at the Reebok Stadium will act as the teamâs base.
The tournament will kick off at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on October 26.
More than half a million people are expected to watch the 28 matches live over a six-week period with a further 20 million viewers from 120 countries tuning in around the world.
The tournament will involve 14 nations: Australia; Cook Islands; England; Fiji; France; Ireland; Italy; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Samoa; Scotland; Tonga; USA, and Wales.
Cllr Morris said: âThis is great for Bolton and great for the young people in Bolton to have such a prestigious event coming to our town.
âWhen the Fijian rugby team visit Bolton, hopefully theyâll take away memories of a town thatâs very friendly and thatâs very welcoming for them.
âThis will get Bolton known all over the world â itâll put our town on the map.
âThe more people we have at the games, the better itâll be for the town.
âIt will also help our tourist industry, because people will come and visit, and theyâll be spending their money in the town.â
