THE Rugby League World Cup trophy came to Bolton as the town prepares to welcome Fijian rugby stars.

Bolton will play host to the Fiji team, who will stay in the borough and play group games in Rochdale, St Helens and Hull.

The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Colin Shaw, and Bolton Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris were in Victoria Square to welcome the trophy to Bolton on its tour of the country.

Cllr Shaw said: “We’re very excited to welcome the Rugby League World Cup to Bolton, and to host the Fijian team, which is an honour in itself.

“Hopefully the Fijians and all our town’s visitors will get to see what a friendly town Bolton is.

“They’ll also see that we’re very sports-minded and co-operative.

“Every major event we have brings revenue into the town and creates a higher profile for Bolton.

“I’d love to visit some of the games and I’m sure I will.”

Cllr Shaw also pointed to the positive impact the Rugby League World Cup could have on Bolton’s younger generations.

He said: “It’ll help a lot with the children’s sport in the town. This is something we are conscious of and have done a lot of work to promote.”

Bolton Arena will be used as a team training camp for Fiji, one of the 14 competing nations, and the Whites Hotel at the Reebok Stadium will act as the team’s base.

The tournament will kick off at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on October 26.

More than half a million people are expected to watch the 28 matches live over a six-week period with a further 20 million viewers from 120 countries tuning in around the world.

The tournament will involve 14 nations: Australia; Cook Islands; England; Fiji; France; Ireland; Italy; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Samoa; Scotland; Tonga; USA, and Wales.

Cllr Morris said: “This is great for Bolton and great for the young people in Bolton to have such a prestigious event coming to our town.

“When the Fijian rugby team visit Bolton, hopefully they’ll take away memories of a town that’s very friendly and that’s very welcoming for them.

“This will get Bolton known all over the world — it’ll put our town on the map.

“The more people we have at the games, the better it’ll be for the town.

“It will also help our tourist industry, because people will come and visit, and they’ll be spending their money in the town.”
