Rugby League: Sam Tomkins goes to New Zealand Warriors in record move

The Wigan and England full-back, above, had repeatedly denied he was quitting the Super League for a lucrative switch to the NRL.

Time and again when quizzed, the best English player of his generation claimed no deal had been agreed with the Auckland-based Warriors, despite his mother taking a holiday there earlier this year.

Yesterday it was revealed that a world-record transfer fee – believed to be £750,000 – was struck 11 days ago for Tomkins, 24, above, who will earn about £380,000 a year. Tomkins, who was on a long-term contract at Wigan that made him the highest-paid player in the Super League, will spend the next three seasons in Auckland and join the Warriors after the World Cup later this year.

The deal sees Wigan have first option on Tomkins should he return to Super League.

His replacement was also confirmed as North Queensland Cowboys full-back Matty Bowen, 31.
