The Giants are a point ahead of Warrington and need to win only one of their two remaining games of the regular Super League season to clinch the league leaders’ shield.
The Wolves kept alive their own chances of topping the table thanks to a 29-16 win at St Helens on Friday night but Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson maintained all along that he was not looking for any favours.
“Our destiny has always been in our own hands,” Anderson said. “Everybody has kept telling us all year we can’t do something so we’ve just kept doing what we do and we’ve achieved something.
“We’ve already got the most points in the competition a Giants team has ever had and no Giants team has been top of the championship with two rounds to go.
“We’ve talked all along about our own story and creating our own history and legacy and that’s what we’ve done.
“We’ve got an honours board in our gym and we’re desperate to put something on it.”
It is 81 years since Huddersfield last finished top of the table and Anderson is determined his players will not allow their big chance to slip through their grasp because of complacency.
“We don’t achieve anything without getting the two points and I’m sure Wakefield will have a say,” he said.
“Wakefield have not been blown away by any team this year. They’re competitive and they work hard for each other.”
It is uncertain whether the Wildcats’ influential Australian scrum-half Tim Smith will line up against the Giants amid reports that he has signed for Salford.
The former Wigan half-back, who joined the Wildcats in 2012 from Cronulla and played a key role in their march to the play-offs last season, is still under contract but is thought to have agreed to link-up with his old Wigan boss Brian Noble at the City of Salford Stadium.
The 28-year-old is set to be unveiled by Salford’s owner Marwan Koukash on Thursday, along with other notable signings as the millionaire looks to turn the Reds into a Super League force.
His departure would be a major loss to the Wildcats and coach Richard Agar but the club are battling crippling debts and are thought to have had no choice but to cash in on one of their prize assets.
