Rugby club apologises over naked men stunt

A SWANSEA rugby club has issued an apology after a picture of six naked men running through Mumbles was published on Twitter.

The photo is believed to be a rugby initiation ceremony for players from Mumbles Rugby Club.

It was posted on Twitter by the club’s official @Mumbles_RFC Twitter account, along with the words: “Senior initiations #blueblood”.

However, after the picture was then widely re-tweeted and published by the Evening Post the tweet was removed. Now the club’s chairman, Martin Rodwell, has apologised for the incident, saying that those involved had been “immediately reprimanded by club officials”.

Mr Rodwell said: “I refer to the picture and article which appeared on page nine of Tuesday’s edition of the Evening Post regarding an incident which involved members of Mumbles Rugby Club.

“Firstly let me say that this sort of prank is not condoned by the club and those involved were immediately reprimanded by club officials. Pictures placed on social networks such as Twitter were unauthorised and have since been removed.

“The club would like to apologise to anyone who was offended by this incident and would like to assure everyone that this sort of prank will not happen again.”

As well as appearing in the Evening Post, the story also had more than 3,000 hits on the Post’s website.

The picture provoked a debate among website users.

Theparcel said: “Typical rugby players, they are a law unto themselves! They will do anything to gain notoriety.

“They have no shame or inhibitions, common sense goes out the window when they get together!”

While pate10 said: “I have seen this happen a few times. It’s hysterical I was in the white rose in mumbles last Summer when the boys ran past.

“A few old ladies in the pub said it made their day.”
