Exclusive: Peter Gentle set to leave Hull FC as Lee Radford favourite to be ...

PETER Gentle will not be coach of Hull FC next season, the Mail understands. It comes as a major overhaul of the club is being planned in the wake of a disappointing campaign at the KC Stadium.

The move will see the Black and Whites return to the club’s roots by appointing locally based staff in key roles. Current assistant coach Lee Radford is favourite to take over as head coach, as he has been influential in strengthening Hull’s defence this season and fits the blueprint of the new local identity being sought.

Major overhaul: Will Lee Radford, left, take over from Peter Gentle as Hull FC’s head coach?

Neither owner Adam Pearson nor any other official club representative was available for comment on Gentle’s position yesterday. However, the Mail understands wholesale changes will be pushed through in the coming weeks, with the move also likely to see academy head coach Andy Last return to the first-team fold. A focus will also be placed on developing young local talent, following the emergence of Hull-born Jamie Shaul this season.

It will mean an early end to Gentle’s time at the club, although no official statement has been made on his position. Arriving two years ago on a three-year contract, he was awarded a one-year extension at the end of last season and had hoped to return the club to its place as a major force in the game.

However, a sixth-placed finish and a Challenge Cup final appearance only glossed over what, on the whole, has been a disappointing year. That ended with an embarrassing 76-18 loss to Huddersfield in the play-offs on Thursday, causing more unrest amongst fans, who have become increasingly frustrated this season.
