“There is no black and white solution so what is key is that everyone is aware
of what is out there in terms of research. Players have to take
responsibility as well as clubs.â
Barnes reports that more care has been taken with the injury since the
five-minute ruling allowing players to come off the field after taking a
blow to the head for assessment was introduced last year.
He acknowledges, though, that the practice is not foolproof, as was shown
graphically in the third Test between Australia
and the British
and Irish Lions in July when Wallaby flanker George Smith came back
on the field even though he was clearly groggy after being knocked out. âThe
five-minute ruling is a tool but only one tool,â Barnes said. âThe doctorâs
decision has to be paramount.â
Meanwhile, Wasps have signed experienced Italy hooker Carlo Festuccia from
RaboPro 12 side Zebre. Festuccia, 33, has appeared in two World Cups and
links with his former LâAquila teammate, centre Andrea Masi at Wasps.
Portuguese side Lustianos have taken the place of troubled Spanish club
Olympus Rugby in this seasonâs European Challenge Cup. Olympus failed to
meet the competitionâs financial criteria. Lustianos will play London Irish,
Stade Français and Prato in Pool 5.
