Concussion a massive problem for rugby, says players" union manager David ...

“There is no black and white solution so what is key is that everyone is aware

of what is out there in terms of research. Players have to take

responsibility as well as clubs.”

Barnes reports that more care has been taken with the injury since the

five-minute ruling allowing players to come off the field after taking a

blow to the head for assessment was introduced last year.

He acknowledges, though, that the practice is not foolproof, as was shown

graphically in the third Test between Australia

and the British

and Irish Lions
in July when Wallaby flanker George Smith came back

on the field even though he was clearly groggy after being knocked out. “The

five-minute ruling is a tool but only one tool,” Barnes said. “The doctor’s

decision has to be paramount.”

Meanwhile, Wasps have signed experienced Italy hooker Carlo Festuccia from

RaboPro 12 side Zebre. Festuccia, 33, has appeared in two World Cups and

links with his former L’Aquila teammate, centre Andrea Masi at Wasps.

Portuguese side Lustianos have taken the place of troubled Spanish club

Olympus Rugby in this season’s European Challenge Cup. Olympus failed to

meet the competition’s financial criteria. Lustianos will play London Irish,

Stade Français and Prato in Pool 5.
