MEREWETHER Carlton jumped ahead of the The Waratahs in the race for the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union top three with a hard fought 27-22 win at Townson Oval on Saturday.
The Greensâ triumph was one of two postponed games and moved them in to third place on 50 points, four clear of Saturdayâs opponents with four rounds remaining.
In the the other game, Wanderers were too strong for cellar dwellers Easts at Dangar Park, winning 38-0 after leading 31-0 at half time.
Merewether, who were without bug guns Dan Kevill and and Mark Wade, led 12-5 at half time.
The Tahs were out-played for much of the first half, but hit back straight after the break to level at 12-all.
That became 15-all before two Merewether tries in 10-minutes to Sam Clifton and Adam Nolan, the second when Tahs replacement Kaveiloni Vikilani was in the sinbin, broke the game open.
The Greens had chances to seal the win but missed two relatively easy penalty attempts.
Tahs player coach Hayden Pedersen, who returned off the bench in his first game back from a broken hand, ensured an an exciting finish when he made a 70 metre break to set up a try for Mitch Nixon to close to 27-22 with five minutes remaining.
