LAPRISE WINS DECISION


GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Chad Laprise of Chatham kept his perfect record intact Saturday by winning a unanimous decision at Xcessive Force Fighting Championship 2: East vs. West.


Laprise improved to 7-0 with the victory over Derek Boyle (10-6) of Lethbridge, Alta.


He won 29-27 on all three judges’ cards in the 155-pound bout.


Laprise fights out of the Adrenalin Training Center in London. His teammates include Chris Horodecki, who beat Edmonton’s Tim Smith by a first-round submission in the main event for the XFFC lightweight title.


CHURCHILL NETS WINNER


Laura Churchill scored the winning goal in the second half as the Chatham Eagles beat the Sarnia Spirit 2-1 on Saturday at Thames Campus Park in the London Area Women’s Soccer League.


Hannah Kennedy of the Eagles opened the scoring, but the Spirit quickly replied for a 1-1 halftime tie.


On Sunday, the Eagles bowed out of the LAWSL City Cup with a 2-1 road loss to Sarnia City in the quarter-finals.


Paige McDowell scored for Chatham.


The Eagles are tied for fifth in the Premier Division with a 4-5-1 record. They’ll visit the Greater London Force on Wednesday and host London Marconi at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Thames Campus.


HAVOC IN FIRST PLACE


The Kent Havoc beat the Niagara Wasps 31-8 on Saturday at Victoria Park in the Niagara Rugby Union men’s ‘B’ division.


Rookie Jack Thomas scored two tries and made four converts for the first-place Havoc (5-1-0).


Matt Sutherland was the man of the match.


The Havoc hosts the Bruce Barbarians this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Victoria Park.


PEEWEE COUGARS THIRD


The Chatham-Kent Cougars beat the Forest City Thunderbirds 33-19 in the bronze-medal game at the Ontario Football Conference peewee day of champions Saturday at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.


The Twin Cities Predators won the gold-medal game 28-0 over the Burlington Stampeders.


CHATHAM SOCCER 0-FOR-3


STRATHROY – Chatham teams went 0-for-3 in the Western Ontario Soccer League’s Cup playoffs Saturday.


The Chatham Express lost 5-1 to London AEK in the Premier Division quarter-finals.


The Chatham Storm lost 2-0 to America Super Dragoes in the Third Division quarter-finals.


The Chatham Attack lost 1-0 to Exeter in the Fourth West Division quarter-finals.


FANTUZ OUT AGAIN


REGINA, Sask. – Tiger-Cats slotback Andy Fantuz of Chatham missed his third straight game Sunday as Hamilton lost 37-0 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.


Fantuz hasn’t played since suffering a lower-body injury at practice July 4.


The Ticats (1-3) host the Roughriders in a rematch Saturday (7:30 p.m., TSN).


SHEPLEY TOSSES GEM


WYOMING – Brooks Shepley pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the Chatham Junior Diamonds in a 2-0 loss to the Wyoming Cattlebarons on Friday.


Max Biskey of the Diamonds was 1-for-2.


On Saturday, Blayne Oliver had two doubles and one RBI in an 11-2 road loss to the Port Lambton Pirates.


Cody Earle added two singles, two stolen bases and a run.


TOURNEYS RAINED OUT


Both Chatham Minor Baseball Association tournaments were rained out on the weekend.


The Chatham Diamonds played one game in the rookie tournament at Jaycee Park before Friday’s storm wiped out the remaining games.


The midget tournament at Fergie Jenkins Field at Rotary Park was also called off.


Neither tournament will be rescheduled.


The CMBA will host the Baseball Ontario junior ‘AA’ championship Aug. 16-18, plus the rookie ‘B’ and major mosquito ‘B’ championships Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.


JV COUGARS CANCELLED


The Chatham-Kent Junior Varsity Cougars’ home finale Friday against the Burlington Stampeders was rained out at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.


The Cougars (4-2) will visit the Hamilton Hurricanes for their regular-season finale Monday in the Ontario Football Conference.
