Mounties Shock Knights

Mounties home game road trip to Canberra has paid dividends with an impressive 28-16 victory over the second placed Knights.

Needing a win to remain in touch with the top eight Mounties start was solid, however it was Newcastle who opened the scoring in the 8th minute when they crossed in the north east corner after a scrum move to lead 6-0.

In the 15th minute Mounties hit back through Pat Galea when he hit a nice hole off Sam Williams and carried the fullback across the line. Sam William’s conversion was off line and the Knights led 6-4.

Mounties then hit the lead when a nice move close to the line from the restart found Matt Allwood with some room to move and he stepped his way through the defence to score and put Mounties in front 10-6.

Mounties then made plenty of opportunities but the Knights defence was up to it and at the break it was Mounties leading 10-6.

Mounties came out in the second half buoyed by their performance and in the 46th minute they crossed through Clay Priest after some quick hands by Bill Topou, Dimitri Pelo and Reece Goldsmith for Mounties to lead 16-6 however the Knight hit straight back scoring in the corner to make it 16-12 with 30 minutes to play.

Mounties then played some outstanding football to score two quick tries when Jordan Ropana crossed after a break from Williams and an offload from Goldsmith, then Ryan Carr dived in under the posts when he fooled the defence with a nice show and go to make it 28-12.

A melee in the 63rd minute reduced both teams to 12 players when Shane Shackleton was sin binned for Mounties and play went end to end until the 79th minute when the Knights winger crossed in the far corner for a final score of 28-16.

Mounties will do battle with the Bulldogs at Aubrey Keech Reserve this weekend, whilst the Knights face Cronulla in a top-of-the table clash at Cessnock Sports Ground.

Mounties 28 (P Galea, J Ropana, C Priest, M Allwood, R Carr tries; S Williams 4 goals) def. Newcastle Knights 16 (C Mata’utia 3 tries; J Mantellato 2 goals) at Canberra Stadium.
