Wigan assistant coach, Paul Deacon has re-affirmed the clubâs ambition to defend the League Leaders Shield despite his priority resting on next monthâs Challenge Cup Final.
The Warriors will undoubtedly be looking forward to taking on Hull at Wembley in four weeksâ time but first face Hull KR, Huddersfield and Catalan in the Super League.
Shaun Waneâs side will more than likely need to win all three games if they are to retain the minor premiership with both the Giants and Warrington hot on their heels.Â
âWe donât see it like that (as a distraction), we see it as great preparation for the cup final,â he told Love Rugby League.Â
âWhen youâre playing in big games that mean a lot, you get used to it.
âObviously the Challenge Cup Final means most at this moment in time but weâre still going for that League Leaders Shield.
âWeâve got Hull KR, Huddersfield, Catalan leading up to the final. I see that as great preparation and I wouldnât have it any other way.â
Deacon last week revealed how he had been headhunted by Steve McNamara to serve as an assistant coach for Englandâs World Cup campaign.
The 34 year-old is promoted from a position on the backroom staff and as a former Great Britain representative himself, he could be a perfect long-term replacement for James Lowes.
âIâm very honoured and very chuffed to be asked,â he added.Â
âThatâs something to think about towards the end of the season because at the moment Iâm focusing on Wigan but Iâm very humble that Steve asked me to do that job as itâs very exciting for me personally.â
League Leaders Shield still a priority says Deacon
