Cheltenham teenager determined to push on to make England rugby team

ATTEMPTS by a teenage rugby player to make it on to the international scene may have suffered a setback.

But Millie Wood is still determined to eventually achieve her goal – in memory of her late mother.

Millie, from Battledown, was told at the weekend that she did not make it into the England Under-20 rugby team after trials at Surrey Sports Centre.

Her mother, Heidi, was a Commonwealth Games silver medalist in swimming.

She died last October after battling with breast cancer for more than nine months.

Millie spends more than 20 hours each week playing and training for rugby.

The versatile centre said: “I was obviously disappointed because it has been something I have been working very hard on. But I knew from the trials that I might not be quite there yet.

“With this experience though, I will need to start working harder to get to that standard, and I am determined to make it next time.”

The former athlete, who represented England schools at shot putt last year, is concentrating her efforts to make sure she can meet the grade next year.

She added: “My mum is my biggest inspiration in everything I do, and I want to achieve so much to make her proud. My dad has supported me in everything, and he gives me so much. He takes me everywhere, and if I need new kit or anything, he is always happy to help me.

“The trials went well, and I am happy with how I performed, but it’s getting to the next level.

“I know it might not be quite what the coaches were looking for yet, but I will get there if I get to trial again next year.”

The Gloucester Rugby fan, who was also a season ticket holder at Kingsholm, said her favourite players include full back Olly Morgan and wing James Simpson-Daniel.

Millie’s father, Paul, 49, said: “I’m sure she will not get too down and come back stronger next year to trial.

“She has got years ahead of her, and a lot of the coaches were supporting her. The experience is great for her, and will stand her in good stead for next year. I am extremely proud of her, and the way she handled it. She’s taken it in her stride and will give it another go next year.”
