A WEST Wickham rugby player is celebrating after playing a part in England U20sâ success at the world junior championships in France.
Matt Hankin, 20, scored the try of the tournament in the 33-21 semi-final success over New Zealand, a win which set up a final date with Wales.
And it was England who secured the crown with a 23-15 victory to cap a memorable tournament for the former Langley Park School for Boys student.
A delighted Hankin told News Shopper: âIt is quite a big achievement.
âWe played Wales in a Six Nations decider last year and beat them so they were up for getting revenge.
âOur plan was to play as we had done throughout the tournament to get the win and that is exactly what we did.
âI heard Wales have never beaten England in an U20 competition before and Iâm pleased to say that is still the case.â
Hankin, who is currently with Saracens as an academy player having enjoyed spells with Beckenham and Blackheath, won plaudits for his fine individual effort in the semi-final against the All Blacks.
He added: âIt isnât often a number seven scores a try and ironically my friend said to me the day before the game âI bet you never score a try in your rugby careerâ.â
Hankin has been offered another year on his academy deal with Premiership outfit Saracens and is determined to forge a full-time professional career with the club, as well as stepping up to the full England set up.
He explained: âIâve already played twice for Saracens in the LV=Cup and next year I would like to play in a few Premiership fixtures.
âAs for England, there is a guy called Matt Kvesic who was playing for the U20s fairly recently and has gone on to win a full England cap against Argentina.
âI look at him as an example of what can be achieved.â
