ST Joseph’s College has completed a county double with both their first XV and under-14s sides winning their respective Staffordshire Cups.

The seniors beat Newcastle Under Lyme School 29-17 in a topsy-turvy final at Longton Rugby Club.

St Joseph’s took advantage of the slope at Trentham Fields to score all 29 of their points in a dominant first half.

Inside centre Tom Godwin claimed two tries for the Trent Vale school, and their were further scores from second row forwards Lewis Bloor and Charlie Poole, before outside centre Sam Betley-Smith completed their points haul.

Newcastle used the slope to launch a second-half rally, but it was too little too late as St Joseph’s held them to 17 points.

The under-14s beat St Thomas Alleyne’s Academy from Stone 10-5 in a gripping final that was settled by tries from centre Callum Hulme, and skipper and Number Eight Anton Connell.

NEWCASTLE beat Handsworth 39-22 at Stoke RUFC to win the Staffordshire Intermediate Cup.

Castle were the underdogs going in to final after losing twice to the Walsall side in Midlands Three West (North) this season.

But they had blooded a lot of younger players towards the end of the season, and reaped their reward with a dominant performance in the showpiece.

Newcastle started well and soon bagged the opening try, Castle captain Dan Jones crossing for a score converted by Ronan Evans.

Defences were generally on top at this stage, however, and the interval score was 10-3 after both sides traded penalties.

Handsworth pushed on after the break, but the Newcastle defence initially stood firm.

Sam Longstaff and Kieran Johnson both put in major hits on Handsworth’s big ball carriers, and then skipper Jones broke through at the other end to claim his second try, which was again converted by Ronan Evans.

Handsworth responded with a converted try of their own to make the score 17-10, but Castle were not to be denied.

Shouted on by their supporters, they pulled away as Longstaff sent Sam Evans in for a try.

A break by Ollie Smalley then saw Ronan Evans cross for a try he converted himself.

Liam Bailey sprinted 25 metres to score again 10 minutes from time to put Castle 32-10 up. Sam Evans scored the final try from a well-executed move, and Ronan Evans converted. Newcastle then let in two tries as they relaxed, but they were never in danger.
