CHILDREN studying heroes as part of their curriculum, got the chance to meet a real one yesterday — when Richard Parks visited their school.

Pupils at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cwmnedd, Glynneath, have spent the past month looking at heroes of the past and present — and at explorers and mountaineering in particular.

But they were left speechless yesterday morning, when former Wales rugby player, turned environment athlete, Mr Parks, was sitting in front of them during their morning assembly.

Dewi Owen, teacher for years four and five, who are studying the subject, said: “In the theme of mountain climbing and expeditions, Mr Parks was ideal to include as a current hero, especially being the first person to complete the 737 challenge.”

Mr Parks completed the challenge, to climb the highest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents and stand on all three poles (The North Pole, The South Pole and the summit of Everest) within seven months in 2011.

“The visit was very inspirational to the children, and it is something they will remember for the rest of their lives,” added Mr Owen.

“We had a question and answer session with him, and they showed him various projects they have done based on him. There are YouTube videos and a magazine.

“He said the video was one of the funniest things he’s ever seen.”

He said the children were “a bit tongue tied” when they spotted the 36-year-old Pontypridd-born athlete, but said they soon asked plenty of questions.

“They asked him if he’d recovered from the frostbite on his toe, and if he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to complete the mountain when he got it,” said Mr Owen.

“They also asked what the toughest mountain to climb was, and also if he’d consider doing the challenge again.

“It’s been so inspirational to us as a school, and humbling for him to have the whole assembly based around him.”
