FORMER England rugby captain Will Carling left his mark on Box Hill during a pro-celebrity cycling challenge on Thursday (May 8).

The 48-year-old was competing in the 100km Hampton Court Challenge, a corporate cycling event which allowed paying members of the public to ride alongside champion riders and personalities from other sports.

But Carling found the famously gruelling climb near Dorking such an effort that he threw up on the slopes.

Another of the sports stars taking part in the ride, former Arsenal and England footballer Lee Dixon, tweeted: “Cyclists be careful climbing up Box Hill. Will Carling left something slippery about half way up! #toomanysausagesatlunch”

He later commented to Carling: “I would have stopped on Box Hill to help you clean up your lunch but too busy laughing!”

Carling responded: “laughing?? I thought you just had asthma !!”

Organised by cycling events company The Pack, the route took 100 riders along stages of the London 2012 Olympic Road Race, including Staple Hill and Box Hill.

Several professional racers took part, including double Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas, multiple Tour De France stage winner David Millar, Australian national champion Steele Von Hoff and Tour Mediterranean champion, Steve Cummings.

Thomas tweeted about the day: “Another @ThePackUK ride, another day in the rain. Seeing @willcarling creeping up box hill, and then puking up, made it all worth it!!”

Other participants included former England rugby stars Martin Johnson and Martin Corry and Masterchef presenter John Torode.
