Alastair Cook: England"s rugby stars will show us how to get over our tour of ...

“Lessons should definitely be learnt from the way the rugby side have gone about it”

Alastair Cook

England’s batting coach Graham Gooch was sacked last week as a clean sweep of the old guard continued.

And Cook added: “I would imagine it has taken a hell of a lot of effort and work for the rugby boys to change it – it is just the way they have gone about their business.

“It is strange. They came second in the Six Nations three years in a row but you can see the development in their side.

“It depends how good the young players that are coming in are but it can be beneficial to bring on the young players.

“Lancaster made some big calls on big players at certain stages in their careers and went for people who were in form and playing well.”

Cook says he has already had some productive talks with head coach Moores, who is in his second spell in charge of the national squad.

“The meetings with Peter have gone well,” said Cook, who also felt some sympathy for Moores after the way the coach was ousted in 2009.

“It is more about getting to know Peter again.

“He’s a very energetic guy who loves cricket and loves England or any side he works for and we have got to use his enthusiasm and drive.”

Meanwhile, Cook has been encouraged by how well the senior players in the England setup, like Ian Bell and James Anderson, have started the county season.

“County performances show how hungry people are to get back in the side,” he added.

“Even the elder statesmen such as Belly and Jimmy.

“We know the class they have and to go out and prove that after the winters they have had bodes really well.

“Guys have put a lot of work in that people don’t see.

“It is exciting looking at scores because there is a little bit of pressure on those guys who were over in Australia to respond to what happened.

“Nobody in the side bowled well enough or batted well enough and people have stuck their hands up on that front.

“Both the senior and younger guys have stuck their hands up and delivered.”
