DHS Stonehouse Sharks U15…32 Saltash/Albion Oaks U16…33
SHARKS put in a positive display against a combined Saltash-Plymstock Albion Oaks team, but paid the price for failing to take their kicking chances in an entertaining pre-season friendly at Stonehouse Creek.
The combined side only met for the first time just before the game, which was clear in the opening 20 minutes, as the first half ended 21-20 to the mixed side.
In the second half the Sharks had the luxury of making a vast number of substitutions. This meant the home side were able to pen the visiting side into their own half for long periods.
The hosts’ under-15s side were not fazed or out-muscled by their older opponents and in terms of tries out-scored the combined XV.
Sharks scored six tries to their opponents’ five, but kicked just one conversion to Saltash/Oaks’ four.
Nevertheless, Devonport High School Old Boys’ head coach Mike Freeman praised his youth players and hailed the match as a ‘brilliant advert for junior rugby’.
Freeman said: “I thought it was a great match and a credit to both sets of players and their respective clubs.
“It was very encouraging our guys held their own physically against a slightly older and stronger set of players.
“And they never looked out of their depth against very good opponents and I think it showed that junior rugby at this level is flourishing.”
He added: “I’d like to thank Saltash and Albion Oaks for their contribution to what was a very good match and a great festival of rugby.”
Freeman’s senior side, Devon Two’s Old Boys, took centre stage later against another cross-Tamar outfit, St Columba/Torpoint.
It proved to be a good day for the hosts, who earned a morale-boosting 19-19 draw against their Devon One opponents.
DHS had done even better the day before, winning 36-7 away to Bodmin II.
