Owen Williams is inspired by the social media support he’s receiving every minute, as he continues his recovery from a horror spinal injury.
The Cardiff Blues centre is working on his arms in the gym and spending time out of hospital as he continues in his battle to recover from the injury he suffered playing in the World Club 10s tournament in Singapore.
His father Huw told Scrum V: âMentally Owen is very good. He’s pretty upbeat most of the time. He’s looking on the positive side and hopefully he’ll keep going that way.”
âOwen is concentrating on physio and rehab in the gym. He’s got good movement in his left arm and he’s working on that quite a bit and trying to get more controlled movement.
âHe doesn’t have the same control in his right arm but he’s working on that. He can move it, which is the good thing and it’s slowly getting better.

The future
âWe try not to look too far ahead, mostly day by day or week by week. But the future crosses our minds.
“Owen is not daft. The hardest thing for me was to mention his car. He bought a brand new one last October.
“But he brought it up with me and told me to get rid of it.â
Owen’s brother Gavin added: âThe type of person Owen is, he’s so positive.
“He’ll do something with his life, whatever capability he’s got.
“It’ll be something that will make people think wow.â
The #Staystrongforows hashtag has trended worldwide on Twitter since the 22-year-old suffered his injury in June.
His brother Gavin says this has inspired the centre and his family and it’s helping him to focus on his recovery, saying: âWe get a message on Twitter every minute, which is great.
âLast week Aaron Ramsey posted a picture of the Arsenal team with the bands on and I can’t put into words how incredible the support is.

Â
âThat’s what’s keeping Owen going. He reads Twitter and other social media every day on his Ipad and realises that everybody is getting behind him. â
His best mate
Owen’s Blues teammate and house mate Macauley Cook admits he didn’t want to touch a rugby ball after the incident. He stayed in Singapore with his friend after the incident and has paid tribute to the centre’s positive attitude.
He said: âThe week after the accident was the worst of my life. I hope I never have to go through that again.
“I hope my family or Huw, Sian and Gavin never have to go through anything like that again.â
