Burglars "knew what they were doing" at Penryn Rugby Club break-in

BURGLARS “knew what they were doing” when they broke into a Penryn sports club stealing hundreds of pounds in cash and damaging the alarm system.

Committee members of Penryn Rugby Club were “angry” and “gutted” after the break-in on Sunday night, when about £500 cash was stolen from the safe and up to £3,000 worth of damage was caused to the alarms and fire door.

Club chairman Robert Stephens said that, according to the computer alarm system, the phone cable was severed at 11pm, 30 minutes after the club was locked up.

The thieves then waited 30 minutes before re-entering the bar area through a kitchen window and smashing the alarm control box, according to Mr Stephens.

He added that the burglars left the building again and lay in wait for a further half an hour before breaking in through the fire door and cutting open the safe with a disc cutter saw.

“They knew what they were doing,” said Mr Stephens.

“They came prepared. They must have been watching the club.

“They waited to see if anyone turned up or the alarm went off after they disabled it.

“Once they knew the alarm system was defunct they had as much time as they liked.”

The club’s committee members, which includes community sports coaches, said they felt annoyed and frustrated.

Mr Stephens said: “It makes you feel sick.

“It is annoying and frustrating because everyone here is a volunteer.

“We are all gutted, after all the hard work they put in.

“It makes you angry because everybody works for nothing and it is for the community and local sports people and then you get people like that which, in the current economic climate, drains our resources which help to put rugby on the field.

“It is going to cost us more money to repair the damage than was stolen.

“Now we are probably going to have to buy CCTV equipment as well.”

Police are appealing for anyone who knows anything about the burglary to call 101, quoting the crime reference number GP/14/72.
