Warburton hands WRU Wednesday deadline

Wales skipper Sam Warburton has reportedly given the Welsh Rugby Union until Wednesday to fund a deal to keep him in the country.

The Sunday Telegraph reports Warburton “is reluctantly resigned to quitting Cardiff” despite previously saying he was keen to remain at the Blues. He has been linked with Clermont Auvergne and Toulon in the Top 14 and Northampton Saints are also understood to be keen on bringing the flanker to the Franklin’s Gardens.

The newspaper claims Warburton is happy to stay at the Blues on a lower deal than on offer in France, but the contract would need topping up by the WRU.

At present, the participation agreement between the WRU and the Welsh regions, a deal which needs to be signed for additional funding to be released, has hit the buffers with a meeting between the two parties tabled for Wednesday.

If Warburton opts to move abroad, with Leigh Halfpenny also strongly linked with a switch to the Top 14, it would come as a hammer blow to the regions. The Cardiff Blues look set to lose Bradley Davies to Wasps while Scarlets’ Rhys Priestland and Ospreys’ Richard Hibbard have also reportedly agreed to deals in the Aviva Premiership.
